How Much Auto Insurance Do I Really Need in Missouri?

By Cash Earnest · Earnest Agency LLC, Wentzville, MO

Missouri sets the floor. You have to decide the ceiling.

Every driver in Missouri is required to carry a minimum amount of auto insurance, but "required" and "enough" are two very different things. After years of helping families in Wentzville, O'Fallon, and St. Charles County sort through their coverage, I can tell you that Missouri's minimums leave a lot of people dangerously underinsured.

Here's what you need to understand.

What Missouri Law Requires

Missouri requires all drivers to carry at minimum:

This is written as 25/50/25. It sounds like a lot until you actually think about what a serious accident costs.

Why the Minimums Aren't Enough

Consider this: the average new car now costs over $48,000. A single vehicle total loss could already exceed your $25,000 property damage limit. Add in a hospital stay, and your $25,000 per-person bodily injury coverage can disappear in a day.

If a jury awards $150,000 to the other driver and you only have $25,000 in coverage, you're personally responsible for the remaining $125,000. That can mean garnished wages, liens on your home, or years of financial hardship.

What I Recommend for Most Missouri Drivers

For most of my clients in St. Charles County, I recommend a minimum of 100/300/100 — $100,000 per person, $300,000 per accident, and $100,000 property damage. If you have a home, investments, or significant savings to protect, consider going higher or adding an umbrella policy.

Beyond liability, here are the other coverages to think through:

I-70 and I-64 Traffic Is Real

Wentzville and the broader St. Charles County area sit at the intersection of two major interstates. High-volume highway driving increases accident exposure. That's not a reason to panic — it's a reason to make sure your coverage matches the risk you actually face every day.

The Bottom Line

The cheapest auto insurance policy is rarely the right one. A small increase in premium can mean the difference between a covered claim and a financial disaster. As an independent agent, I shop your coverage across multiple carriers to find the best combination of protection and price for your specific situation.
