Independent Agent vs. Captive Agent: Why It Matters for Your Wallet
By Cash Earnest · Earnest Agency LLC, Wentzville, MO
When you buy insurance, who your agent works for matters as much as which policy you buy.
Most people don't realize that not all insurance agents operate the same way. The type of agent you work with determines how many options you have, how objective the advice you receive is, and ultimately how competitive your rates are. Here's what you need to know.
Captive Agents: One Company, One Set of Options
A captive agent works exclusively for a single insurance company — State Farm, Allstate, Farmers, American Family, and similar carriers all use the captive model. These agents can only sell that company's products.
There's nothing dishonest about this. Captive agents often know their company's products deeply and provide excellent service within that system. But there's a structural limitation: if their carrier's rates aren't competitive for your situation, they genuinely can't help you find something better. Their job is to sell you their company's policies.
Think of it like going to a Ford dealership. The salesperson is knowledgeable and helpful, but they can only sell you a Ford. If a Chevy or Toyota better fits your needs and budget, they can't point you there.
Independent Agents: Multiple Carriers, One Relationship
An independent agent like me represents multiple insurance carriers — often dozens. When you ask for a quote, I shop your coverage across all of them and present the options that best fit your needs and budget.
The practical benefit is real. Different carriers have different underwriting appetites. One carrier might offer the best auto rates for a household with teen drivers; another might be most competitive for a home with a pool or an older roof. I know which carriers perform well for which situations in Missouri, and I direct clients accordingly.
Using the car dealer analogy: I'm like a broker who has relationships with Ford, Chevy, Toyota, Honda, and more — and my job is to find you the right fit, not push one brand.
How I Get Paid — And Why That Matters
Independent agents earn a commission from the carrier when a policy is placed. You don't pay me directly. My commission rate is roughly similar across the carriers I represent, which means I don't have a financial incentive to steer you toward one carrier over another — my goal is to find you the best overall option so you stay with me long-term.
A captive agent's incentives are different: they're rewarded for placing business with their one carrier, period.
What Happens at Renewal?
This is where working with an independent agent really pays off over time. When your policy renews and the rate goes up — which it will eventually — I can re-shop your coverage across my entire panel of carriers to find a better option.
A captive agent is stuck. If their carrier raises rates significantly, the only thing they can do is hope you stay anyway. An independent agent can move your business to a carrier offering better value without you losing continuity of coverage or having to find a new agent.
What About Direct Writers (Geico, Progressive, etc.)?
Direct writers sell insurance directly to consumers, often online or over the phone, without an agent involved. They can be competitive on price for straightforward situations — particularly for drivers with clean records and newer vehicles.
The trade-off is service. When you have a question, a claim, or a life change that affects your coverage, there's no local person who knows your full picture to call. You're working with whoever answers the phone at a call center.
For simple, single-vehicle situations, a direct writer might be fine. For families with multiple vehicles, a home, a business, or coverage needs that interact with each other, having a local agent who understands the whole picture is genuinely valuable.
Why I Do This Work
I grew up in this community. My clients are my neighbors, and I want to be the person they call when something goes wrong — not because they have to, but because they trust me to take care of them. That relationship matters more to me than any single policy.
If you're wondering whether you're getting the best value on your current coverage, call me. I'll give you an honest comparison, and if your current carrier is already the right fit, I'll tell you that too.
